Clash between ‘Los Chapitos’ and ‘Los Mayitos’ cells in Sonora leaves five dead

Clashes between the armed wings of ‘Los Chapitos’ and ‘Los Mayitos’ in San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, left five dead and five arrested; local authorities confirmed that the Mexican Army waited for the shooting to end to carry out the operations, where they captured three alleged hitmen in two homes.

The violent events occurred on the night of Saturday, September 28, in four different points of the city, and the five deceased people were located in these areas after the explosions stopped, so it is presumed that those killed belong to organized crime groups.

The Sonora State Prosecutor’s Office reported that “a response operation was immediately carried out by the forces of the Criminal Investigation Ministerial Agency (AMIC), State Public Security Police (PESP), Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), Secretariat of the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) and National Guard (GN)”.

The authorities managed to arrest three alleged generators of violence identified as Iván Alfonso “N”, Carlos Alberto “N” and Félix Arón “N”, along with the seizure of three vehicles and four firearms.

Later, the Attorney General of the State of Sonora (FGJES) reported that two operations were carried out in order to “weaken these criminal cells, in which positive results were obtained.”

The first search was in the Libertad neighborhood of said border municipality, where they captured Roberto “N” alias ‘El Ruco’, 63 years old, who is originally from Jalisco, from whom they seized 27 packages with methamphetamine, 210 blue pills with the legend M30 and a black gram scale.

The second was in the Campestre neighborhood, where they arrested Óscar ‘N’, 50 years old, originally from CDMX, in his possession they found 28 packages of methamphetamine.

Which criminal groups are fighting for control of San Luis Río Colorado?

Three criminal groups operate in San Luis Río Colorado fighting for the region: ‘Los Rusos’, the armed wing of the ‘Mayitos’, who entered Sonora through the Mexicali Valley, seeking to take control of drug trafficking in the region from ‘Los Deltas’ and ‘Los Pelones’, two criminal cells of ‘Los Chapitos’.

Given the increase in violence in 2024 in this demarcation, the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo Montaño, and the members of the State Security Board, decided to create a single command in the border municipality to reduce homicides in the city.

It should be noted that, in a coordinated operation, elements of the SEDENA and the AMIC seized 24 video surveillance cameras installed illegally in various colonies of San Luis Río Colorado.

The cameras were placed on power poles, street lights, telephones and even palm trees and homes.
