Expansion and modernization of the Tepic and Puerto Escondido airports: An investment of 7 billion pesos

Ampliación y modernización de los aeropuertos de Tepic y Puerto Escondido: Una inversión de 7 mmdp

In an effort to boost airport infrastructure and tourism in Mexico, an investment of 7 billion pesos (mdp) will be made for the expansion and modernization of the Tepic Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Escondido airports.

This project will be carried out through a public-private partnership between Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA), state governments and the company Mota Engil.

Projected capacity for 2030: significant passenger growth

During a press conference, Javier Villazón, general director of ASA, announced that by 2030, the Tepic Riviera Nayarit airport is expected to have the capacity to move 1.4 million passengers per year, while the Puerto Escondido airport will reach 2 million passengers.

These projections reflect the positive impact that the modernization of both facilities will have on the tourism and air transport sector in the region.

Villazón highlighted the importance of the creation of the Mexican Tourist Airport Group, an initiative that strengthens the collaboration between ASA, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport and local airports. This synergy seeks to support the development of air transport in Mexico, adapting to a new economic and tourist environment.

Improvements in infrastructure: runways, taxiways and platforms
Both airports have already received important extensions in runways, taxiways and platforms, with the aim of increasing their operational capacity and improving the passenger experience.

This work has been a joint effort between the government and the private sector, always maintaining the State’s leadership in the management of the airports.

New terminals to meet growing demand

One of the keys to the project is the construction of new passenger terminals at both airports. These new facilities will allow the airports to increase their annual capacity from 3 to 5 million passengers, thus responding to the growth of tourist and commercial demand in the region.

The Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, Jorge Nuño Lara, explained that 3.5 billion pesos have already been invested in the first phase of the project and that the airports are already in operation.

The second phase, which includes the completion of the passenger terminals, will have an additional investment of 3.5 billion pesos and is expected to be completed by mid-2025.

Investment details by airport

The investment breakdown shows that a total of 4.133 billion pesos will be allocated to the Tepic Riviera Nayarit airport, while 3.028 billion pesos will be invested in the Puerto Escondido airport.

These amounts underline the magnitude of the project and its impact on regional infrastructure.

This ambitious modernization plan seeks not only to improve the quality of air transport in Mexico, but also to promote economic and tourist development in the areas where these airports operate, which will contribute to the sustainable growth of the industry in the coming years.
