Artisanal Cuban Boat Appears on Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres

These types of boats are very common, as people use them to reach destinations in search of opportunities.

Early this Tuesday, an artisanal boat appeared on Playa Norte, with its occupants reportedly fleeing into the streets of the historic center, according to witnesses.

The boat is believed to have arrived at dawn in the area known as “Riíto,” near Casa de Rocas, where sailboat captains competing in regattas have been welcomed since 1964, when the national sailboat “Isla Mujeres” won the tournament.

Some curious tourists were there to see up close one of the dozens of artisanal boats that Cubans use in search of better living conditions, risking their safety.

Over three decades of undocumented landings in precarious boats on the island and surrounding areas, it is often only abandoned boats that are seen on the beach, as was the case this time.
