Global Entry is Now Free for Kids: Here’s How to Register

Global Entry, a Trusted Traveler Program, offers expedited customs clearance for preapproved, low-risk travelers entering the U.S. through dedicated security lanes at over 75 airports.

Recent changes to the Global Entry program bring both good and bad news.

The Bad News

Starting October 1, the application fee for a five-year Global Entry membership will increase to $120. This is the first price hike since 2009, but the 20% increase is still a significant change for frequent travelers.

The Good News

Applicants under 18 are now exempt from the application fee if a parent or legal guardian is already a member or is applying for Global Entry. Previously, a family of four would pay $400 ($100 per person). Under the new rule, a family of four with two children will pay only $240 ($120 per adult, $0 per child under 18).

While this may not be great news for individuals or couples, families with children can now save hundreds on application fees. This change makes it more affordable to register children for the first time.

Other Trusted Traveler Programs

Like Global Entry, the application fees for Nexus and SENTRI, two other Trusted Traveler Programs by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, are now $120, but children under 18 can apply for free. Nexus allows expedited processing between the U.S. and Canada, while SENTRI does the same between the U.S. and Mexico.

How to Apply

To apply for any Trusted Traveler Program, visit the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s website and click “Get Started” for the desired program. Create or log in to your Trusted Traveler Program account (first-time applicants will need to set up a new account).

Complete the online application by entering identifying information, travel and residency history, completing a criminal background check, and verifying your U.S. citizenship with your passport and driver’s license information. Submit the online application and pay the $120 fee.

You must complete an in-person interview before full approval. If conditionally approved, you may complete this process upon returning to the U.S. at an airport participating in Enrollment on Arrival. Otherwise, schedule an appointment at an enrollment center before your next international trip. Most applications are approved within two weeks, but some may take up to 12 months or longer.

Saving Money on Application Fees

Even though kids under 18 are now free, adults can save on Global Entry application fees by using the right credit card. Several credit cards reimburse the fee as a statement credit when used to pay the application fee.

Bottom Line

Families can now save money on expedited reentry to the U.S. with free Global Entry applications for kids under 18. It’s a great time to start planning your next big family vacation!
