Hoteliers in Playa del Carmen seek to resume the Barrio Mágico project

The Barrio Mágico project, aimed at boosting the tourism promotion of Playa del Carmen, should be resumed by the next municipal administration, said Offner Arjona, president of the Association of Small Hotels of Playa del Carmen.

During various meetings between local authorities, business representatives, chroniclers, and historians, it was proposed to establish the area that would encompass the Barrio Mágico in downtown Playa del Carmen.

Among the proposals, it was suggested to rename the area known as Casco Viejo and include emblematic sites such as the Fundadores Park with its iconic Portal Maya and the archaeological site in Playacar.

Offner Arjona recalled that in the last meeting with the authorities, it was only pending to wait for the national call for proposals to present the Barrio Mágico project.

“The project has a strong focus on attracting tourism, which would directly benefit small businesses in Playa del Carmen. It is important to resume this initiative and generate collaboration with the municipal government to present a solid proposal when the call is available and evaluate if Playa del Carmen can obtain this distinction,” said the hotel leader.

This Barrio Mágico distinction could further consolidate Playa del Carmen’s relevance as a tourist destination that not only offers dreamlike beaches but also local history and culture.
