‘Kuni’ project cancelled in BCS; 4T and governor take credit for themselves, activists say

Esperan que se formalice la cancelación de Kuni

The governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Castro Cosío, announced the cancellation of the “Kuni” project, which was intended to be installed near the Balandra Protected Natural Area, however, environmental activists reported that it was the promoter who gave up on the project due to social pressure.

The project called Kuni promoted by the company Maravia S.A de C.V., has been suspended. The promoters gave up the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA) process before the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), as reported through a statement.

The Ecological Gazette is the platform that disseminates the list of project entries and the issuance of resolutions derived from the environmental impact assessment procedure. In its publication of September 26, 2024, Kuni appears with the status of “not applicable.”

The MIA of the KUNI promoter under the key 03BS2024U001 is no longer in the approval process as published in the gazette on July 11 when it was entered to seek consent.

“The project promoters themselves gave up, that is, they said they were no longer going to continue with the process regarding environmental impact assessment and asked Semarnat to end it and they themselves say they are going to reconsider the project,” said Alejandro Olivera, member of the Center for Biological Diversity.

The governor of Baja California Sur, Víctor Castro Cosío, announced the cancellation of the “Kuni” project in the middle of a demonstration by organized society.

“This mega development that they are shouting about here today is cancelled and the fourth transformation is cancelled,” said the South Californian governor.

It was an achievement of the organized society of BCS

The organized society recalled that thousands of South Californians were those who raised their voices expressing concern about the entry of the project that intends to build 20 thousand hotel rooms and more than 3 thousand houses on a surface of 1,658 hectares near the protected natural area Balandra.

In addition, more than a thousand people participated in the public consultation of the Semarnat expressing observations and rejection of KUNI.

“It has already been put on its portal in the list of projects that were not accepted and the Kuni project is included here. Unfortunately, the governor took the credit or at least that is what he made it clear, that the State Government had cancelled it, but no, it was not any authority, it was the promoters themselves who are requesting the withdrawal of the procedure,” mentioned Alejandro Olivera.

Activists point out that the movement against KUNI, which did not have political support but merely citizen support, was the one who achieved the suspension of the project, an achievement for the organized society.

The movement hopes that the document terminating the process before Semarnat will be made public in order to find out whether it was a withdrawal by the company or a cancellation by the government.

They also ask the authorities to update the Urban Development Program for the population center of La Paz and issue the Local Ecological Planning Program that will really help these projects reach the territory.
