Last triennium, the most violent in Cozumel’s history: Pedro Joaquín

In the 2021-2024 municipal administration of Cozumel, the number of executions exceeded that reported in the last 10 municipal governments combined, assured Pero Joaquín Delbouis.

In a message he posted on his social media, addressed to “those who say that previous governments are responsible for the violence that is lived today in Cozumel and the rise in delinquency indices,” the former mayor shared a graph that includes the executions of the last four administrations.

According to data, during the period 2013-2016 there were 4 executions; 2016-2018, also 4; 2018-2021, 5 and 2021-2024, 40.

“The numbers don’t lie and we refer to evidence to say that the triennium that has just concluded has been the most violent in all of Cozumel’s history.”

Last week, Johana Acosta Conrado, the state leader of the Movement for National Regeneration (MORENA), launched strong criticisms against the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the National Action Party (PAN), blaming them for the increase in insecurity in Cozumel.

Through her personal Facebook account, she stated that the poor management and lack of effective strategy by previous governments are the true causes of the current situation on the island.

“Decades of disinterest, incompetence and lack of commitment to the well-being of the people of Cozumel are the true causes of the increase in insecurity we face today,” she wrote.

Acosta Conrado also criticized members of traditional families on the island, stating that their lack of action over decades allowed violence to grow unchecked.
