Students from the Intercultural Bilingual Teachers’ College call for a march in San Cristóbal

More than 200 students from the Jacinto Canek Bilingual Intercultural Normal School, located in the municipality of Zinacantán, in the Altos region of Chiapas, will march on Wednesday, October 2nd starting at 12 noon. The purpose of this march is to remember the massacre of students in Tlatelolco, Mexico City, and to commemorate the anniversary of the Normal School.

In the context of the murder of students in Tlatelolco and the 24th anniversary of the founding of the Jacinto Canek Bilingual Intercultural Normal School, the students announced in a telephone interview that they will carry out cultural activities at the normal school and that they will march to the Cathedral Plaza of this city.

The normalistas mentioned that the concentration will begin at 12 noon in front of a department store, and then they will march through the main streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas, concluding with a rally in the center of the city, where they will make a statement about the reason for the protest.

They pointed out that this demonstration is also to celebrate the creation of the Jacinto Canek Normal School, and that, 24 years after its foundation, they lack qualified teachers to teach classes and need the repair of several classrooms in poor condition. “Our march will be peaceful and we will not allow people to infiltrate the contingent, but we do demand that the signed minutes for the benefit of the normal school be fulfilled,” they concluded.
