TOP 5! These Are the Most Violent States in Mexico in 2024

AMLO’s six-year term ended with nearly 200,000 homicides, despite his claims of a decrease in the perception of insecurity, leaving the issue for President Claudia Sheinbaum to address.

According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), in López Obrador’s last year (from January to August 2024), there were 28,962 homicides nationwide, 17,116 of which were intentional homicides.

These Are the Most Violent States

SESNSP figures indicate that Guanajuato ranks first, being the state with the most intentional homicides, with 1,630 accumulated in the year and 198 in August. It is followed by Baja California, with 1,434 in the year and 178 in August.

In third place is the State of Mexico, with 1,367 in the year and 152 in August; followed by Chihuahua in fourth place with 1,142 intentional homicides and 131 in the same month. Finally, there is Nuevo León with 1,098 and 162.

In contrast, the states with the fewest intentional homicides were:

1. Yucatán: 28 in the year, 2 in August

2. Baja California Sur: 37 in the year, 3 in August

3. Durango: 45 in the year, 6 in August

4. Coahuila: 62 in the year, 10 in August

5. Campeche: 63 in the year, 13 in August

Despite Violence, Sinaloa Is Lower

On the other hand, in her first morning press conference, Sheinbaum said she had her first meeting with the security cabinet and, although she announced that she would present her national plan in the coming days, she insisted that the state of Sinaloa, where violence has surged, was not among the top places.

“By the way, Sinaloa does not appear among the five states with the highest number of homicides, the first is still Guanajuato,” the president emphasized to the media. It had 312 in the year and 39 the month before last.

She assured that security cabinet meetings would continue, and that the national security plan would be presented on October 8.
