Queen Calafia evokes a sovereign of a mythical island inhabited by warrior women, a symbol of strength and mystery. By naming the tournament in her honor, the identity of Los Cabos and Baja California Sur as part of greater California is reinforced, connecting with history and values such as female empowerment and connection with the ocean, key elements for both surfing and local culture.
The tournament is open to both professionals and amateurs who wish to participate. This event joins a trend in Latin America to encourage the participation of women in surfing, similar to what is happening in Colombia with the Colombian Women’s Surf Collective, which recently organized the country’s first children’s women’s tournament, “Olas Divinas.”
Axel Gutierrez, Secretary General of the Baja California Sur Surf Association, states: “This event is much more than a surfing competition; it is a celebration of the sports spirit and an opportunity to strengthen the community of women surfers in Mexico. We want all participants to feel the support and energy of a tournament designed specifically for them, in an environment that highlights the best of surfing and local culture.”
Los Cabos is emerging as a destination for surf lovers, thanks to the convergence of its marine ecosystems, which creates a variety of waves suitable for all skill levels. The destination, home to international events such as Los Cabos Open Surf, the BCS State Surfing Tournament and the Mexico International Surf Tournament, has positioned itself as a preferred region for the development of this sport. Beaches such as Acapulquito and Costa Azul offer optimal conditions, with gentle waves for beginners and tubular waves for the more experienced; surfers can enjoy a varied offering, ranging from surf schools to stores specializing in quality equipment.
The winners from first to third place will receive trophies, surfboards and products such as swimsuits, goggles, and beachwear, as well as monetary incentives. Although it is its first edition, the competition aims to become a benchmark for surfing in Latin America, standing out for its focus on female participation.
In addition, it is an event that promotes sports tourism in the region and celebrates the rich surfing culture in Mexico. It is estimated that in 2023, sports tourism will represent between 10 percent and 25 percent of total tourist arrivals in the country.
