Concerns Over Insecurity in Mérida, Yucatán Public Transportation; Reports of Crimes and Harassment

Various incidents of violence have been reported on units of the “Va y Ven” Transportation System operating in Mérida.

In a single day, two criminal incidents occurred on buses of the “Va y Ven” public transportation system in Mérida.

In the first incident, a man injured a young man in the neck with a knife on board a bus after the victim resisted a robbery attempt.

The attempted homicide took place in the Chuburná de Hidalgo neighborhood, on Avenida Tecnológico near Calle 21.

The victim, a young man around 22 years old, managed to get off the bus to seek help, while the attacker fled the scene.

Paramedics from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) arrived at the location where the bus stopped to provide first aid to the young man, who was then transported to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) hospital in the Juan Pablo II neighborhood due to the severity of his injuries.

Following the report, the State Police launched an operation in the area and later announced that the suspected attacker had been arrested and handed over to the relevant authorities.

Additionally, SSP agents detained a man who was sexually harassing a young woman on a “Va y Ven” bus.

According to a social media post by the victim’s sister, the incident occurred on a bus on the Nora Quintana route.

She indicated that the young woman was sitting next to a man who was touching himself throughout the journey and at one point touched her sister’s leg.

The victim informed the driver about the situation, who immediately requested the presence of the Yucatán Public Security Secretariat to proceed with the man’s arrest.
