Amaury H.B. and Lilia Ana T.P. have been found guilty of aggravated homicide for the death of a hotel businessman in Mérida, facing a possible sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison.
After validating the evidence presented by representatives of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), a tribunal found Amaury H.B., a 32-year-old Cuban, and Lilia Ana T.P., a 44-year-old therapist from Puebla, guilty of aggravated homicide. The conviction was for the murder of hotel businessman Roberto Kuri Llamas on December 5, 2022, in the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz neighborhood, north of Mérida. According to the law, they could receive a sentence of at least 20 to 40 years in prison.
During the oral trial held at the Oral Justice Center of Mérida (Cejom), the litigation prosecutors presented forensic, documentary, and testimonial evidence. The members of the First Collegiate Tribunal of the Judiciary considered the evidence sufficient to issue the guilty verdict, but the defendants will learn their sentence in a hearing scheduled for next Thursday.
According to the evidence contained in the investigation file under criminal case 393/2022, both accused injured and beat the victim, Roberto Kuri Llamas, at a hotel outlet in the Díaz Ordaz neighborhood, where he died from his injuries.
Sentencing
After being found guilty, the defendants will be presented at a sentencing hearing where the penalties will be announced. According to records, the Yucatecan businessman was murdered on the afternoon of Monday, December 5, at the intersection of Calle 8 and 17 in the Díaz Ordaz neighborhood. Authorities later arrested one of the suspects, who was found with a firearm. It appears the hitman came from Quintana Roo, and the murder was a settling of scores.
How the Crime Occurred
According to the narrative of events, on the day of the murder, the Cuban suspect went to a hotel outlet that sells hotel supplies and garden furniture, demanding payment of a debt. When the victim refused, the suspect pulled out a .380 caliber gun and shot him. Although the victim fell wounded, he was still alive, so the assailant hit him on the head with the gun. He then ordered an employee to help put the body in the trunk of a vehicle. When the victim tried to escape, the Cuban hit him with a stick and suffocated him. He then covered the body with a sheet and tied it with cables.
As he attempted to flee, agents from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) arrived after a disturbance was reported. The hitman was heard calling someone named Ana. Two vehicles with Quintana Roo plates were used for the attack. Although the woman managed to escape momentarily, authorities found her Toyota Avanza abandoned at the Cristo Resucitado church in the Montecristo neighborhood of Mérida. Later, thanks to surveillance cameras, they located a Seat Ibiza on the Periférico, where the accomplice was allegedly traveling.
Trial Begins for the Accused
The suspects were later brought before a Control Judge, who declared the arrest legal and imposed preventive detention. The accused were linked to the process on December 13. Since then, the Cuban has remained in the Social Reintegration Center (Cerso) and the woman in the women’s prison.
As part of the investigations, it was revealed that the deceased had been exposed for fraud in 2016 through a poster in the city that read: “Return the money you stole from the children’s home.” Additionally, he faced several fraud complaints for allegedly charging for merchandise he sold but never delivered.
On social media, comments emerged about the hotel outlet, with locations in Díaz Ordaz, Altabrisa, and Francisco de Montejo, for not delivering the sold items despite charging for them. There were also several threats of complaints from dissatisfied customers.
