Argentine Found Dead After Disappearing in a Mexican Cenote

Roberto Omar Alejandro Gandini Buix, 51, went diving last Friday in Dzonbakal, Yucatán, but never resurfaced. His body was found this Sunday at nearly 25 meters depth.

Roberto Omar Alejandro Gandini Buix, the Argentine diver who disappeared last Friday in the Mexican cenote Dzonbakal, was found dead on Sunday during rescue operations conducted by a team from the Yucatán Technical Sports Divers Association and members of the Fire Department.

Local authorities will now attempt to determine the cause of death of the Argentine, who had experience in cave diving, an activity focused on exploring underwater caverns.

Around 11:30 AM on Sunday, Gandini Buix’s body was found by rescuers in the second cavern of the water mirror, at an approximate depth of 25 meters, with empty oxygen tanks, reported the Diario de Yucatán.

The cenote where the tragedy occurred is located in the San Antonio Mulix commissary, belonging to the municipality of Umán, Mexico. It was reported that the athlete was accustomed to diving in Dzonbakal with his children. However, on Friday, he entered alone to explore unfamiliar areas and, for reasons under investigation, did not resurface.

Concerned that he had not returned from his dive, the victim’s family reported the disappearance to emergency services, and a rescue team was immediately mobilized to locate the missing diver.

Upon finding the body, tactical divers proceeded with the recovery of the victim’s remains. Subsequently, personnel from the State Police Investigations and the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Near another spectacular cenote, X-Batún, Dzonbakal is semi-open and measures approximately 25 meters long by 15 meters wide. Additionally, this water mirror has a maximum depth of 30 meters.
