Army general removed from office after saying Sinaloa’s peace depends on armed groups

After 20 days in which the commander of the Third Military Zone, Francisco Jesús Leana Ojeda, responsible for providing security to the states of Durango and Sinaloa, declared that the tranquility in Culiacán, Sinaloa, did not depend on the Mexican Army but on criminal groups, he was removed from his position.

On September 16, General Leana Ojeda declared in a press conference in the capital of Sinaloa that they had the capacity to react to the violent events that have caused the death and disappearance of hundreds of people in the state, however, restoring peace in the region depended, according to his words, on the groups themselves that dispute control within the Sinaloa Cartel, that is, La Chapiza against La Mayiza.

“We want it to be as fast as possible, but it does not depend on us, it depends on the antagonistic groups that stop confronting each other and that they are leaving society in peace,” a statement that became a trend and caused indignation among the inhabitants of Sinaloa.

The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, the secretary of government of Durango, Héctor Eduardo Vela Valenzuela, and officials from both states, as well as military commanders, attended the inauguration of the new command.

The representative of the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) was the division general, a graduate of the General Staff, Norberto Cortés Rodríguez, who reported that by instruction of the president of Mexico and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Claudia Sheinbaum, he took the oath of office of the new appointment in the Third Military Zone.

“By order of the constitutional citizen president and supreme commander of the Armed Forces, the citizen general, a graduate of the General Staff, Guillermo Briseño Lobera, present here, will be recognized as interim commander of the Third Military Region, to whom the respect due to his hierarchy will be maintained and he will be obeyed in everything he orders in reference to the service by word or in writing in accordance with the provisions of the laws and regulations,” reported General Cortés Rodríguez.

Regarding General Guillermo Briseño Lobera, it is known that he has also held the position of commander of the 40th Military Zone in Guerrero and the 16th Military Zone in Guanajuato.

For his part, General Francisco Jesús Leana was only relocated, and by instructions of President Sheinbaum was named commander of the First Military Region of the Sedena, which includes Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Morelos and Hidalgo, to combat crime in these states.
