Classes Suspended in Campeche Due to Category 5 Hurricane Milton

Complaints poured into the Secretariat of Education in Campeche, as classes were not suspended in time despite the rains from Hurricane Milton, forcing students to travel to school in heavy rain.

Classes at all educational levels were suspended due to the inclement weather in our state caused by the passage of Category 5 Hurricane Milton, which is in the Gulf of Mexico and has affected the three states of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Strong complaints from parents, students, and the general public forced the Secretariat of Education (Seduc) to cancel classes, although the measure was ‘late,’ as many schools were already open, with principals, teachers, administrative staff, and students about to start classes.

Children, teenagers, and young adults with backpacks had to leave their schools after educational authorities announced that there would be no classes due to the effects of this hydrometeorological phenomenon. This caused anger, as some had to wake up early, travel from distant neighborhoods, and even take taxis to arrive at school on time.

Some teachers also arrived from other localities or municipalities in our state to teach their classes, incurring unnecessary expenses. They commented that classes should have been suspended yesterday, as forecasts from Civil Protection warned of heavy rains due to the passage of Hurricane Milton.
