Due to insecurity, lung doctors operate at 40 percent in Mazatlán

The insecurity in Sinaloa has generated a notable drop in the demand for tourist services in Mazatlán, which directly affected the lung workers, who now work with a reduced capacity.

According to Luis Mariano Ortega Vizcarra, general secretary of the Mazatlán Pulmonary Alliance, he said that the economic situation of this union is critical, since it is estimated that they operate at only 40 percent of their capacity.

“We are in a very critical situation right now, and the truth is that there are no signs that it will improve,” said Ortega, referring to the decrease in the arrival of tourists.

According to him, during the nights the services are practically suspended due to the lack of clients.

“During the week there is very little work and on the weekend we are left alone in Mazatlán,” he added.

The union faced a severe economic crisis, comparable to the times of the pandemic, when tourism also collapsed.

“We are facing a very severe economic crisis that threatens to return to the times of the pandemic, when we practically stopped receiving any income,” said Ortega.

The secretary of the Pneumonia Alliance attributed this drop in tourists to the violence that plagues the state.

“The issue of insecurity is generating this psychosis, which in some way has been unfounded. The situations that have occurred on the roads, the blockades, no longer give people the certainty of being able to travel with the minimum levels of security,” he explained.

Low expectations

Although the last quarter of the year is usually a time of high demand due to the arrival of tourists, Ortega warned that if the situation does not improve, expectations for December are not encouraging.

“If this continues as it is, the numbers coming for December will be worse,” he said.

In addition, some drivers have chosen to stop working due to the lack of income.

“There are people who are stopping work, they have nowhere to go, what they are doing is stopping going out to spend gasoline,” Ortega concluded.
