The island of Holbox woke up to a dense calm after Hurricane Milton passed by the state’s coasts. However, strong winds from the remnants of the natural phenomenon, which is moving away from this tourist destination, were forecasted for midday and the afternoon, municipal authorities reported this morning.
Few residents decided to stay in their homes on the island, betting that the hurricane would bring nothing more than hurricane-force winds and intense rains during the early hours of Tuesday and throughout the rest of the day. This led the municipal authorities to declare a curfew starting at eleven at night.
Moderate rains caused by the hurricane left puddles on the roads at night, and the winds were less severe than those of Hurricane Beryl, according to those who stayed in the tourist destination and have been monitoring Milton’s progress, respecting the authorities’ instructions to stay indoors due to the cloud bands and wind gusts still being felt.
The beaches appear deserted, according to images and videos shared by authorities and some residents who have ventured out to check the damage or make last-minute purchases as activities begin to resume.
Mayor Manuel Esscamilla Garcia stated that so far, there have been no significant incidents in Holbox. However, wind gusts are still being felt due to the hurricane’s slow departure, so strong winds and possibly rain are expected for the rest of the afternoon.
