Warning of rain and collapses in Guerrero and Oaxaca

Residents of Oaxaca and Guerrero have called for help to the authorities in the face of the risk of housing collapse, attributed to the persistent rains in these states.

According to information from residents of Coicoyán de las Flores, a municipality located in the northwest of the state, in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, at least 50 families had to abandon their homes due to the danger they represent.

Some walls have already fallen, but in the hope of saving their properties or keeping them standing until they obtain the requested support, they have placed sticks to support roofs and walls.

Inside the houses, there is debris of earth, mud and stones, and furniture such as beds, chairs, tables, even bags of clothes, were placed in front of the walls to act as counterweight, but the cracks or fissures, protruding or tilted bricks and sinkholes are evident.

Through videos posted on social media, those affected are urging the authorities for help, stating that since Hurricane John and the rains that have not stopped falling, they are living in a state of latent danger.

“I ask the Governor (Salomon Jara) to take care of our situation because the houses are in poor condition with their roofs and this house has collapsed due to the rain,” he said, showing the damage to his property.

“Thank God the family is not here, because they are taking refuge somewhere else. Please take care of the situation we are experiencing right now and give an answer about what we are managing regarding the firm roof, Mr. Governor, thank you very much,” he added.

Those who have decided to go out to seek shelter are also encountering difficulties on the roads, due to landslides, slippery mud and because debris has also fallen.

Some have gone to seek shelter (without any indication from the authorities) in the construction of the hospital that is in the rough, where they live among shortages, but which is temporarily functioning for those who have lost their property.

Four days ago, machinery was brought in to remove the mud from the streets, but residents documented how it fell into a ravine. In that municipality, two people lost their lives due to heavy rains, Celso and Osvaldo, father and son, so citizens have cooperated to help the family.

“With the little we have, but the family was left helpless,” said one resident.

In Acapulco, Guerrero, the collapse of a wall was also reported at the “Primer Congreso de Anáhuac” school in the La Máquina neighborhood, an incident also caused by the softening of the ground due to the rains that have not stopped in the region.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident on Avenida Estado de México, but residents are warning of the risk of two classrooms and two light poles collapsing in the area.

In the San Agustín Housing Unit in Acapulco, citizens reported the collapse of 30 houses due to the rising river, and they have also requested urgent support from the authorities, as due to the constant rains, they fear that their situation will worsen without a roof and the loss of their property.

The National Meteorological Service warned that showers with heavy rainfall and electrical discharges are forecast for this Saturday in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz and Tabasco.
