Back in Tamaulipas: Northern lights could be seen due to a geomagnetic storm

Due to the effect of a G4 geomagnetic storm, the northern lights could be seen again in Tamaulipas, this time in the state’s border municipalities during the night of October 10 and 11.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center’s aurora forecast, the cause of the auroral phenomenon is a geomagnetic storm that has strengthened, reaching G4 conditions.

What causes the northern lights?

The portal explained that it is a major disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field, whose intensity usually varies between lower levels and severe storm conditions throughout the event.

“Storm conditions are expected to occur during the night as the CME (Coronal Mass Ejection, CME) progresses,” the website updated.

This will be the second time this has happened in Tamaulipas

Caused by a solar storm, on Saturday, May 11 of this year, EL SOL DE TAMPICO reported that the northern lights could be seen in different parts of the Mexican Republic.

Although it was unlikely, the auroras could be seen in the night sky of the metropolitan area, as well as in different regions of the state, tinting the sky with slightly purple and red glows.

The Astronomical Society of Tamaulipas, stated that the northern lights could be observed at low latitudes during this night, October 10, and in the early morning.

As on other occasions, to be observed it is necessary to do so in areas with little light pollution and with long exposure photographs.

Consequences of the phenomenon

The geomagnetic storm that will occur is classified as G4-Severe, according to the five-level scale with which the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States) classifies the intensity of solar storms, detailed the National Geographic portal, Spain.

The phenomenon could lead to a possible increase and frequency of voltage control problems and a greater possibility of anomalies in satellite operations, reported the Space Weather Prediction Center.

As occurred 5 months ago, in states in the north of Mexico, northern lights could be visible, which includes municipalities on the border of Tamaulipas. On this occasion, caused by a G4 geomagnetic storm.
