The fine is for people who enter the workshop area in the Metro, either because they fell asleep and no one dropped them off at the terminal or because they did it voluntarily.

The above is based on article 29 of the Civic Culture Law of Mexico City, which in its section XI says: “The following are violations against the urban environment: Entering areas designated as restricted access in places or buildings intended for public services, without the corresponding authorization or outside of established hours.”

The fine for offenders is between 21 and 30 Units of Measure (UMA). In 2024, the value of each unit is 108.07 Mexican pesos, according to Inegi.

Therefore, the final cost of the fine can be between 2,268 and 3,240 Mexican pesos.

In summary, the fine for falling asleep on the Metro is legal, but only when people reach the prohibited areas of transportation. Therefore, be careful when traveling, especially if you are tired.

It is worth recommending that if you see someone who has fallen asleep, it is a good gesture to wake them up to avoid a fine that exceeds the weekly earnings of someone who earns the minimum wage.
