Chiapas Zoque Maya Festival Announced

The Government of the State of Chiapas, through the State Council for Cultures and the Arts (Coneculta), in coordination with the Las Rosas City Council and the State Center for Indigenous Languages, Arts and Literature (CELALI), announced the program for the XXXIV Chiapas Zoque Maya Festival, which will take place on October 18, 19 and 20 in the municipality of Las Rosas, Chiapas.
In this regard, Maritsa Concepción Maranto Zepeda, general director of Coneculta, highlighted that the purpose of the festival is to make visible, transmit and disseminate the biocultural knowledge of ancient peoples, in addition to promoting harmonious coexistence with the universe, for the generation of good living in diversity.
“The festival will have 53 activities in total, including ceremonies, music, dance, conferences, literature, painting, workshops and art exhibitions, totally free events that strengthen the cultural dynamism of the entity and the link with Mother Nature. In addition, ethnic roots related to history, language, ancestral knowledge, art and culture of the native peoples of Chiapas are rediscovered,” she said.
She also explained that there are 23 municipalities that will participate in the Maya Zoque Chiapaneca, which is made up of the following participating groups: Zoque (6), Tseltal (5), Tsotsil (3), Ch’ol (2), Chiapaneca (2), Tojolabal (2), Acateco (1), Mam (1) and Guatemala (1), with a total of six linguistic regions present.
The general director highlighted that the Festival Network began with the XXIV International Marimba Festival that will take place from October 10 to 13 in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and will continue with the XXXIV Maya Zoque Chiapaneca Festival, from October 18 to 20 in the municipality of Las Rosas.
He acknowledged the support of Governor Rutilio Escandón Cadenas, for promoting the strengthening of the cultural diversity of the entity through this festival, where local knowledge is shared and languages ​​are preserved.
Likewise, he highlighted the sum of wills and the inter-institutional work with Jesús Antonio Orantes Noriega, municipal president of Las Rosas, who will unify the culture and the historical future with the scheduled activities.
Jordán Orantes Rovira, president of the Municipal Cultural Committee of Las Rosas, on behalf of the municipal president, Jesús Antonio Orantes Noriega, thanked him for allowing them to host the broadcast of the XXXIV Chiapaneca Zoque Maya Festival, in one of the oldest towns of the Meseta Comiteca.
“With the Tancoy Carnival dance, we are one of the three most representative masks and dances of the state. We are a dance of Tseltal origin, which began in the post-revolution era, in a sense of satire for military movements in the region and in 2027 will celebrate 100 years of tradition,” he said.
Therefore, he invited the general public to attend this meeting with the word, with prayers, with ceremonies, dance and music of the people.
