An American woman, nicknamed “Lady Playa,” was recorded chasing several tourists who were trying to swim at the public Isla Blanca beach in Quintana Roo.
In the video, a woman in the United States tries to expel people from a beach, claiming it is private due to her property. However, passersby respond that all beaches are public, and she has no right to chase them away.
The woman says to them, “Hey, hey, this site it’s private.” Lady Playa insists the beach is hers, despite others telling her that all beaches in Mexico are public and accessible to everyone. Some question her claim, suggesting she might have been misled about the private ownership of the beach. Nevertheless, she continues asking people to leave and inquiries about which hotel they are staying at.
Lady Playa encounters some people on a public beach who tell her they have the right to be there. A witness records everything and uploads it to TikTok, where it goes viral. In the video, Lady Playa appears quite upset, hurling insults in both English and Spanish. As they cannot reach an agreement, the tourists decide to leave, and the video ends.
Private Beaches in Mexico?
In Mexico, all beaches are public, and any action that prevents access is illegal, according to an October 2020 reform. Beaches are national assets and must be accessible to everyone. Property owners who obstruct access can face significant fines and must allow access from adjacent lands, even if there are no direct public paths.
