Migrants stranded in Veracruz; blockades on train tracks prevent them from reaching the “American dream”

The blockade of the Ferromex-Ferrosur train that for 18 days was maintained by inhabitants of the municipality of Chapulco, Puebla to demand water supplies has caused migrants to be unable to advance and to remain in municipalities in the south of Veracruz, said José Luis Reyes Farías, president of the Civil Association Movilidad Humana Mercedaria.

In an interview, he explained that there is more presence of migrants in the municipalities of Acayucan, Rodríguez Clara, Isla, Tierra Blanca, Coatzacoalcos and others in the south and that this in turn has triggered cases of crime, since the presence of migrants who arrive to cause harm to society is increasing.

He explained that when their journey is impeded, some migrants offer work to the inhabitants in exchange for food and lodging; and even others find a partner and finally stay in national territory.

“Since migration has stagnated, the authorities begin to intercept them, so many go to towns where they cannot be detected,” he says.

Why have migrants not been able to continue their journey?

And it is because of the train blockade that was registered for several days in Puebla, the majority of migrants did not find a way to continue their journey, “because their mobility usually occurs through this thing known as ‘the Beast’ and without financing, they have to wait for the train.”

The president of the Civil Association Human Mobility Mercedaria assures that while the passage is regularized, they have suffered inclement weather and have had to resort to the support of the citizens to maintain themselves.

However, he insists that among the migration “black spots” have been detected, because among the migrants “there are many people who have dedicated themselves to crime in their country and we are filling up with that population dedicated to doing social harm.”

The above has caused the citizens to suffer robberies, extortions, kidnappings and other types of crimes, to the point of making them more cautious and not opening the doors of their houses easily.

At the Mercedaria Human Mobility shelter in Acayucan, robberies by migrants have also been reported; “we always act in good faith, but now we are more cautious,” he says.

“As a result of many experiences of antisocial behavior, many people are reluctant to provide humanitarian aid; it is becoming more difficult every day. We have always been motivators for society to be supportive and provide humanitarian aid, but they are attacked, robbed and that is why there are limitations,” he reiterates.

Last Saturday, Javier Aquino Limón, Secretary of the Interior of the State of Puebla confirmed that after reaching an agreement with the company Ferrosur, with residents of the auxiliary council of Puente Colorado in the municipality of Chapulco, they freed the railroad tracks of the Veracruz-Mexico City route. However, the blockade lasted 18 days, causing economic damage that has not yet been recorded.
