BCS Congress Calls to Halt “La Abundancia” Project Due to Environmental Impact in Cabo Pulmo

The Congress of Baja California Sur (BCS) has asked SEMARNAT to cancel the environmental permit for the “La Abundancia” project due to its environmental impact.

The State Congress of Baja California Sur urged the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) to revoke the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA-P) authorization granted to the “La Abundancia” tourist project, promoted by the company GRE El Rincón. The project involves the construction of a tourist and residential complex near Cabo Pulmo National Park, raising concerns about potential environmental damage.

Deputy Lupita Saldaña Cisneros presented the Point of Agreement, detailing that the project violates various environmental regulations, including the Mexican Constitution, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the Ramsar Convention, which protects wetlands of international importance. According to Saldaña, the construction of this complex, covering 68.6 hectares, would severely affect the region’s ecosystems and biodiversity.

During the discussion, Deputy Karina Olivas Parra, a member of the Ecology and Environment Commission, supported the motion, emphasizing the need for transparency in all processes related to the project. Olivas requested that forums be opened for debate with specialists and civil society to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Deputy Teresita de Jesús Valentín Vázquez called for a thorough investigation into the irregularities in the project’s authorization and sanctions for those responsible. She also requested the reversal of the permit granted on September 12.

Finally, the Congress also requested the creation of a special commission to monitor the progress and outcome of the review of the granted permits, in order to keep the Legislative Power informed about the project’s future.
