Religious Discrimination and Stigmatization Denounced in Campeche

Estela Reyes, representative of the Network of Women and Men for Public Opinion with a Gender Perspective (Redmyh) A.C., pointed out that although violence based on religious beliefs is not the focus in Campeche, there is clear discrimination against those who do not share the predominant beliefs, which are deeply rooted in the local culture.

Reyes emphasized the lack of scientific data to understand the magnitude of this problem in the state, which complicates the design of strategies to address it. She stressed that all forms of violence, including discrimination based on beliefs, are human rights violations that must be urgently addressed.

Despite some advances in human rights and gender equality, Campeche remains a conservative state influenced by religion, which is reflected in the resistance to changes in issues such as sexual and reproductive rights, sexual diversity, and the secularism of the State. Although instances have been created to protect women’s rights, conservative structures limit more inclusive and progressive policies in these areas.
