Oaxaca will celebrate Day of the Dead, ‘the most lively festival of all’, with 55 activities: Since when?

With joy, mysticism and solemnity, Oaxaca prepares to celebrate the Day of the Dead, the most lively festival of all, with 55 activities full of culture and tradition that will take place from October 26 to November 3.

From the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, the coordinator of Social Communication of the State Government, Elizabeth Álvarez Acosta, invited citizens to learn about the cultural, linguistic, gastronomic and spiritual wealth of the entity, within the framework of this date in which death is lived and celebrated to pay tribute to life.

“In Oaxaca, the festival of the dead has a special touch with its comparsas, which consist of processions in which the living dress in traditional costumes, catrinas, devils, dead, among others accompanied by music bands,” she said.

For 9 days the streets of the city will be filled with cempasúchil flowers, the smell of copal, incense, fruits and bread that are placed on altars in homes to open the portal of return that connects the dead with the world of the living.

Through the Secretariat of Cultures and Arts, 41 activities will be developed in the museums of Pre-Columbian Art Rufino Tamayo; of the Oaxacan Painters; of Contemporary Art and of the Oaxacan Cultures; Zócalo of Oaxaca de Juárez; Government Palace and Kiosk of the Zócalo.

Those who attend will witness the celebration and funeral rituals through concerts of sacred and funeral music, exhibitions of altars of the dead, sand carpets, exhibitions of plastic and graphic arts, literature, dance and two massive concerts.

From October 28 to November 3, local, national and foreign people will be able to observe the Monumental Carpet Representative of the Day of the Dead that the Secretariat of Interculturality, Indigenous and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities (SIPCIA) will place in the Portals of the Government Palace.

The Secretariat of Tourism will install the Path to Mictlán in the Tourist Walkway of Oaxaca de Juárez, which will have nine monumental sculptures.

On October 28, a sculpture called “La Catrina” will be placed in front of the Government Palace, a piece that will be made of stone. On October 30, the Day of the Dead Festival, Xandu’ the visit of our people, will be held for the first time on pedestrian priority streets adjacent to the Government Palace.

On November 1 at 6:00 p.m., the Day of the Dead Invitation will take place, which will start from the Fountain of the Eight Regions and arrive at the Alameda de León. On the same day at 8:00 p.m. there will be a performance alluding to the tradition of the Day of the Dead.

On October 30, the Sports Institute (Indeporte) will hold the 5k Athletic Race “Recorrido al Mictlán” at 5:00 p.m., which will start at the Panteón del Exmarquesado, pass through the central streets of the state capital and end at the Panteón General. Prior to the start of the race, at 3:30 p.m., the Mass Physical Activation Class will be held.
