Arsenic and fluoride: call to stop the contaminated water crisis in Durango

High levels of arsenic and fluoride have turned Durango’s water into “poison,” warned Deputy Cinthia Montserrat Hernández, president of the Water Commission in the State Congress.

When meeting with the Water Advisory Council, she raised the urgency of obtaining more resources to carry out water works, and pointed out that cooperation between the state government, the local Congress, federal legislators and municipalities is necessary to solve this long-standing problem.

She emphasized the importance of the Potable Water Plant in Durango capital being able to begin operations, in addition to the approval of the project for the construction of the Tunal II Dam, so, she affirmed, the sum of efforts is necessary to knock on the doors of the federal government and reduce the damage that water causes to the people of Durango.

In addition to the hydraulic works, the legislator stressed the need to renew the pipes and meters, which are obsolete, to guarantee an adequate water supply. He pointed out that many of the leaks are due to damage to the pipes, while in homes there are meters up to 50 years old, which do not register the correct use of the vital liquid.

Water shortage causes serious health problems, they warn
In this regard, Guillermo Pérez Gavilán, president of the Water Advisory Council, explained that water contamination, with high levels of arsenic and fluoride, is related to serious health problems such as the increase in cancer cases and the affectation of the intellectual coefficient, especially in children. According to him, children, being in the development stage, are one of the most vulnerable groups in this situation.

He agreed that one of the main solutions is the construction of the Tunal II Dam and the activation of the Potable Water Plant, projects that would help ensure access to clean water for both human consumption and for the industries of the region. He also pointed out that, by extracting water from greater depths, the levels of heavy metals in the liquid increase, making it essential to use water from dams.
