Organized Crime Attempted to Charge “Protection Money” to Walmart in Campeche

The case was reported by the Secretary of Economy of the State, Fernando Gamboa Rosas.

Fernando Gamboa Rosas, Secretary of Economic Development of the State of Campeche, revealed that executives of the company Walmart, which plans to open a new store in Palizada on November 12, have been victims of an extortion attempt.

During a meeting at the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry, Gamboa Rosas revealed that representatives of Walmart Mexico contacted him to request help regarding the situation.

“They asked us for help because they are being demanded to pay protection money, which they are not willing to pay,” the official commented.

The company Walmart plans to open a new store in Palizada on November 12, and according to investigations, the extortion issue is already being addressed by the authorities of the State Attorney General’s Office.

“Protection Money” in Ciudad Del Carmen

Regarding the collection of protection money, this activity has been mainly detected in the municipality of Carmen, where the criminal group operating there (Pura Gente Nueva) primarily targets companies in the oil sector and nightlife businesses.

The case of businessman Said Gorra del Río, who killed two alleged criminals in Ciudad del Carmen, is precisely related to the so-called collection of protection money or extortion.

Another area where criminals practice extortion is in construction, a situation that has been reported through the media.

In Campeche, there is also knowledge of the incursion of organized crime in the field of extortion, especially targeting bar and cantina entrepreneurs.

However, when the issue is raised with the authorities, they insist that it is an isolated situation and that Campeche continues to be the safest state.

While Governor Layda Elena Sansores San Román maintains that Campeche is a safe state, reality seems to contradict that discourse.
