Women of Cancún, increasingly strong in the construction area

20% of women have demonstrated and proven the ease of performing strength work.

Women from Cancún are making their way in construction, an area where they have demonstrated their ability and good performance. Of the 500 people recently hired for the works being carried out in El Meco, at least 100 are already working as bricklayers on this megaproject, according to Luis Enrique Hernández Castillo, head of the Employment and Training Directorate in Benito Juárez.

In this regard, he said that records show that the latest vacancies offered by construction companies at municipal job fairs have been filled by 20% women, after recruiters have verified their effectiveness and ease in performing strength work.

“Fortunately, they can now occupy any position, as long as they are willing to do jobs that have been stigmatized for years as being for men, such as in the construction industry. We have had companies that not only recruit men but also women, because they have commented that they perform very well,” the interviewee emphasized.

He highlighted that although this is seen as a rough trade, there is room for them to develop. Even the State Institute for Youth and Adult Education (IEEJA) can provide literacy so that in the future, if they decide, they can access an administrative position.

According to the follow-up carried out by the municipal Employment Directorate, in general, of the 2,000 vacancies available every two weeks, women occupy 41% of these positions, mostly in companies in the tourism sector.

This Monday, at the “Empléate en Rosa” event, held once a month and visited by about 500 people until noon, the Municipal Institute for Women (IMM) participated, providing information on mammograms and the services of the department.
