Residents block the Teopisca-San Cristóbal highway due to lack of attention to landslides

It has been 24 hours since a blockade was established on the federal stretch between Teopisca and San Cristóbal de las Casas by residents of various communities in the municipality of Teopisca. The protesters demand the removal of the material that fell from the hill on October 15, which represents a danger for motorists, who could be buried under tons of earth and rocks. Faced with this situation, they decided to completely close the road from yesterday morning, Wednesday, with the aim of pressuring the authorities to remove the material that obstructs the passage.

Fortunately, two machines have arrived to begin the removal of the tons of earth, rocks and trees that fell in the area at kilometer 107, near the community of Nuevo Jardín el Edén. Although work has already begun and several dump trucks have been deployed to remove the material, the road remains closed. The inhabitants have left, leaving the workers to carry out their work, while public transport users can walk and then take another vehicle to reach San Cristóbal and Teopisca.

As for the alternate route that was also blocked yesterday, it has been enabled, allowing small motorists to travel on that road to reach both cities. However, they must take precautions, since some parts of the road are dirt. Civil Protection authorities have also recommended extreme caution on this route.

Blockade begins from Teopisca to San Cristóbal

Residents of Teopisca block the Teopisca-San Cristóbal federal section due to the abandonment by the authorities, who have not removed the tons of earth and rocks that fell from the hills on October 15.

Nine days have passed since the landslide at kilometer 107, near the Nuevo Jardín el Edén community, in the municipality of Teopisca, tons of earth and rocks continue to block the road. Faced with the inaction of the authorities, the inhabitants of communities and ejidos decided to take the road from the early hours of this Thursday. They also blocked the alternate route that was being used, which left many motorists stranded in the area of the blockade. Public transport users are forced to walk and look for other vehicles.

This protest arises because the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) has not started work to solve the landslide that occurred on the night of October 15 on this stretch of road. For 15 days, motorists have sought alternate routes to reach San Cristóbal and Teopisca.

The landslide caused the closure of vehicular traffic, so a detour was enabled that only allows the passage of small vehicles. However, this road was also blocked this morning to pressure the authorities to carry out the work of removing the material that obstructs the road. Faced with this situation, motorists and farmers from Teopisca have decided to carry out a total blockade of this important road that connects both cities.
