This weekend, the maritime phenomenon of swell is expected on the coasts of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and throughout the state of Guerrero, according to the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection. The phenomenon will cause waves up to 2.1 meters high, prompting authorities to issue a preventive warning to swimmers and tourism service providers to take extreme precautions.
In the case of Zihuatanejo, local Civil Protection has indicated that additional security measures will be implemented on open sea beaches, such as Playa Larga, Playa Blanca, Playa El Palmar in its three stages, and La Majahua, as these areas have historically been affected during swell episodes, increasing the risk of people being swept away.
Permanent surveillance by lifeguards is expected in these areas to prevent accidents and protect tourists. Authorities highlight that the phenomenon will also cause a reduction in the sand strip, the formation of rip currents, and recurrent swells on the affected beaches.
The swell will remain active for approximately 48 hours, with a forecast to gradually dissipate by the end of Monday.
