Analyzing the possibility of dredging in the Bay of Chetumal

After the project could not be completed in the Zaragoza Canal, Apiqroo is now focusing on the state capital to carry it out.

After the dredging project in the Zaragoza Canal was canceled due to its environmental impact, the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) announced that the project is now intended to be carried out in the Bay of Chetumal, so that larger vessels can reach the south of Quintana Roo.

According to information provided by the head of Apiqroo, Vagner Elbiorn Vega, bathymetric and environmental impact studies are currently being conducted to determine if dredging will be feasible in this case. Therefore, it is not yet definitive that the project will be carried out in this part of the state, as it is still in the evaluation stage.

In this regard, he assured that the aim of this project is to boost nautical activity to strengthen the economy of the southern part of the state through the maritime sector. The agency is optimistic about the results of the preliminary studies in the region, hoping they will be favorable and that the potential of the capital city can be leveraged.

It is worth mentioning that this project was discarded in the Zaragoza Canal in 2023, as studies determined that the work was not viable due to the environmental impact it would have on the body of water. Although the work had begun, it did not continue after the studies yielded their results.

Vagner Elbiorn also noted that Apiqroo has contacted specialists from Dubai to learn about the latest technologies that would allow dredging in the Bay with the least possible environmental impact. So far, studies have indicated that the limit would be three meters to avoid damage, as one of the methods used so far tends to be implosion.

On the other hand, this project could easily be combined with another one that is still in the planning stage, which is the creation of a dock for the arrival of cargo ships, which could be built in Mahahual and even in the Bay; this was also recently announced.
