End-of-Year Festivities in Oaxaca: Color, Flavor, and Culture

From October to December, experience the festivities with which Oaxaca closes the year, from the mountains to the coast! These celebrations are full of tradition and not to be missed.

The last quarter of the year already feels festive with preparations to end the year traveling, an activity we love to do. It’s the perfect time to plan festivities and getaways to close 2024 with a flourish. The state of Oaxaca, one of our favorite destinations, is already planning multiple festivities that will fill this land, proud of its roots, with color, flavor, and traditions. Here’s the agenda for the last quarter so you can enjoy the end of the year in Oaxaca!

A Gastronomic and Cultural Delight

The final stretch of the year begins with the Festival del Mole de Caderas, held in the city of Oaxaca from October 25 to 27. Additionally, in Huajapan de León, the heart of the Mixteca region, the festival will also take place on October 26.

In Huajapan de León, the festival will be framed by the Guelaguetza Ñuu Savi. The event will start at 4:00 PM with a parade of delegations through the main streets, ending at the Teatro del Pueblo. At 5:00 PM, the Guelaguetza will take place, a multicolored festival of brotherhood among the Mixtec peoples.

The richness of the Mixteca is celebrated with other events such as the Cultural Meeting of Wind Bands in the Magic Town of San Pedro and San Pablo Teposcolula on October 24. Here, various music bands will adorn the town, known for its beautiful open chapel, the largest in Latin America. And if you are a traveler with an eye for food, you cannot miss the Barbecue and Craft Beer Festival in Villa Tejúpam de la Unión on October 27. This destination is 1 hour and 45 minutes from the Oaxacan capital.

Day of the Dead, an Unmissable Celebration

Everyone should experience this quintessentially Mexican celebration in Oaxaca at least once in their life. The Day of the Dead in 2024 has a schedule with more than 30 activities for everyone’s enjoyment, including a concert by the group Panteón Rococó and a performance by Julieta Venegas. The State Government, in collaboration with the Municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez, has many more surprises prepared for all attendees, reasons to visit Oaxaca at the end of the year.

It will be a full week of activities. There will be a parade alluding to the emblematic celebration, traditional comparsas, and the staging of “Catrina.” The Municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez will organize an expo fair of pan de muerto, chocolate, and a wide culinary offer typical of the tradition. Meanwhile, the State Government will organize a Day of the Dead fair where the general public can enjoy seasonal delights such as chocolate, pan de yema, and tamales from the eight regions of the state.

End-of-Year Celebrations in Oaxaca Continue on the Coast

In November, the Oaxacan coast offers, in addition to its beaches and natural beauty, one of the most anticipated events of the year. The Magic Town of Mazunte is the venue for the International Jazz Festival, which will take place from November 15 to 17. In Puerto Escondido, a famous international beach destination, the Guelaguetza de Mar will be held on November 23 and 24, where delegations from the eight regions of the state will showcase their grandeur. The event’s unique setting is the Zicatela beach, globally recognized for its waves ideal for surfing.
