Residents of the Atasta Peninsula in the municipality of Carmen, south of Campeche, have blocked Highway 180, the main road that connects the Yucatan Peninsula with the rest of the country, with sticks and stones. They have already been protesting for more than 20 hours.
The residents are asking for the road to be repaired since many accidents have occurred due to the potholes.
“We want a new road, we want a new road, we want a new road,” said the complainants.
The residents are asking for personnel from the National Defense Secretariat, the Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation Secretariat and the Federal Electricity Commission to arrive so that they can quickly resolve their demands.
Luis Heredia, a resident of Carmen, said that “everyone knows that the road has been in bad condition for years and the truth is that there have been many protests and they have ignored them and today other decisions have been made, although in reality it is affecting the transporters, but we have no choice but to act in this way to see if those responsible for the road take action on the matter and follow up on it because it has been in this state of disrepair for a long time.”
Antonio Jiménez, president of the Governing and Administrative Board of the Congress of Campeche, said that the 35 deputies are going to demand that the Secretariat of National Defense, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation and also the Congress of the Union, immediately address the roads.
Due to the blockade there are already more than 15 kilometers of lines of vehicles on both sides of the road affecting more than 5 thousand people who have not been able to reach their destinations.
