Royal Caribbean announced on Wednesday an investment of more than 600 million dollars to develop the Perfect Day Mexico concept in Mahahual, which consists of an exclusive tourist development of 90 hectares for tourists who disembark from their cruises in the south of Quintana Roo.
It will be similar to the Perfect Day Coco Kay development that the shipping company already has on a private island in the Bahamas, where they offer exclusive amenities ranging from slides, international restaurants, infinity pools, areas for adults only, among others.
The shipping company’s bet is that from this project, the port of Mahahual can go from the 2 million it currently receives to 5 million in 2030.
Jay Schneider, director of Product Innovation at Royal Caribbean International, assured that the entire complex will create 3,000 jobs, of which at least 1,000 will correspond to the construction phase and the rest for the operation of the complex.
The project includes a connection to the Mayan Train, as well as its own treatment plant, in addition to self-supply of drinking water through a reverse osmosis plant.
The expansion of the current cruise ship dock is also planned, which is the second in attracting cruise passengers nationwide, only below Cozumel.
According to the company’s director, due to the change of government they were unable to start the environmental impact process, so they hope to finalize this procedure before the end of this year to begin work in 2025 and begin operations in 2027.
Once it is completed, they anticipate that in the first year of operations Mahahual will attract three million cruise passengers.
In her speech, Governor Mara Lezama assured that this project seeks to strengthen the tourist infrastructure and provide the destinations with quality equipment, in addition to reaffirming Royal Caribbean’s confidence in the tourist potential of Mahahual and its commitment to the local community.
The project will be developed in coordination with the State Agency for Strategic Projects and the University of Quintana Roo, ensuring that social and community impact is a priority,” said the president.
In March of this year, Royal Caribbean also announced the construction of an exclusive beach club for its clients in Cozumel, with a budget of 75 million dollars and an estimated capacity, once in operation, of up to four thousand people per day.
