Following the arrest of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, a wave of violence broke out in Sinaloa. This week, the person who is allegedly generating the clashes in the state, in the fight for territory with ‘Los Chapitos’ and another faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested.
Edwin Antonio Rubio López, ‘El Max’ was arrested by the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) in an operation on Monday, October 21, where the death of 19 people was reported.
‘El Max’ is the head of a criminal group related to ‘El Mayo’ Zambada. This is led by Ismael ‘El Mayito Flaco’ Zambada Sicairos, according to the information shared by the Sedena.
Sinaloa faces ‘El Mayo Flaco’, son of the drug trafficker arrested in July. And this is because he dropped flyers in some neighborhoods of Culiacán, where he allegedly declared war on Rocha Moya, according to a radio newscast.
What is known about ‘El Mayito Flaco’ Zambada?
In June 2023, ‘El Mayito Flaco’ Zamabada was named by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as ‘Fugitive of the Week’ for “conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.”
The US authorities describe him as a dangerous fugitive and he is possibly armed, so he called on the population not to stop him on their own.
‘Mayito Flaco’ is the second son of drug trafficker Ismael Zambada García and María del Refugio Sicairos Aispuro. He was born in 1982, so he is 42 years old and his country of residence is Mexico.
The first accusation against Zambada Sicairos occurred in 2013, when he received multiple kilograms of methamphetamine from Asia, to store it in Mexico and organize its transfer to the United States. The DEA points to him as one of the key figures in the operation of the Sinaloa Cartel.
‘Mayito Flaco’ has three brothers linked to drug trafficking: Vicente Zambada Niebla, Serafín Zambada Ortiz and Ismael Zambada García alias ‘Mayito Gordo’, who was released from prison in early May 2023.
What happened in the trial of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada?
On Friday, October 18, the United States Attorney’s Office analyzed the possibility of requesting the death penalty for Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada in New York, according to what the prosecutors reported before Judge Brian Cogan, who agreed that the issue be discussed during the trial against the drug trafficker, reported journalist Arturo Ángel in an ‘X’ thread.
In response to this request, Judge Cogan questioned whether the death penalty is the appropriate sanction in this case. The prosecutors responded that the crimes are as serious as those charged to Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, but in this case with two aggravating factors: fentanyl and time.
Upon leaving the first hearing of ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, journalist Arturo Ángel explained that the death penalty against the drug trafficker would apply because he was not subject to an extradition process, which would stop the punishment.
This comes after it was revealed that it was Joaquín Guzmán López who had deceived and kidnapped him in order to hand him over to the US authorities.
