Roads in Oaxaca and Guerrero Cleared After Hurricane John: SICT

The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport (SICT) has reported that roads and highways in Oaxaca and Guerrero affected by Hurricane John are now completely cleared.

In Guerrero, there were 433 incidents on the federal highway network and 7,590 on the state network, affecting nearly 4,000 kilometers. In Oaxaca, there were 300 incidents on the federal network and 59 on the state network.

Response and Recovery Efforts

From the first days of the hurricane’s impact, the SICT implemented works to clear both the federal and state networks, with support from the government of Guerrero. Currently, there is a project to rebuild six damaged bridges.

In the federal highway network of Guerrero, 18 traffic cuts were carried out and reopened within the first five days after the hurricane. Temporary passages were provided in six affected bridges. In the state network, 63 affected bridges were cleared in just seven days, along with the removal of 1,875,000 cubic meters of earth from landslides and 791,000 cubic meters from mudslides.

Efforts in Oaxaca

In Oaxaca, 300 incidents were recorded, with nine roadblocks reopened to traffic within the first five days after the event. Two bridges were attended to with temporary crossings within the first 15 days, and more than 200,000 cubic meters of earth were removed from landslides and collapses.

For the state network, which spans approximately 12,800 kilometers of roads, 59 incidents were attended to within the first 15 days. This included the removal of 420,000 cubic meters of earth from landslides and 343,000 cubic meters from collapses. The execution period for these efforts extended until October 27.
