Children of murdered journalist were attacked by soldiers in Sonora; they denounce abuse of authority

Amidst assaults and without any warrant, elements of the Mexican Army broke into a home to subdue three young men in San Luis del Río Colorado, Sonora. Two of them arrived at their residence in a white vehicle, while a third was inside the house. However, this was not an impediment for a soldier to subdue him and escort him to the street.

These are the children of journalist Jesús Gutiérrez, murdered in 2023, who reported having been victims of abuse by elements of the Army. Recordings from a security camera corroborate the story they tell about the assaults they were victims of by the military.

In the recording that was spread on social media, it shows the moment when one of the young men is opening the entrance of his home so that a white vehicle in which they were traveling could enter. According to his testimony, they were returning from work when the events occurred. A few seconds later, a Mexican Army truck approached the home; A soldier approached the door and tried to open it with a kick, and three soldiers later entered. One of them kicked and hit one of the young men who was on the floor with his weapon. The other was subdued and hit in the abdomen. The third, according to relatives, was in the house in one of the rooms asleep, but one of the soldiers took him out to the street.

The young men’s uncle approached to warn the soldiers that they have federal protection, due to the murder of his father. The family is even in the Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists and Human Rights Defenders.

“Perhaps their mistake (the young men’s) was that in view of the soldiers they rushed to close the door because they were scared when they saw that they were looking at them. Then one of the soldiers kicked the fence and knocked it over, then he grabbed one of the young men and hit him in the head with the pistol, kicked him and subdued him with his foot. Another soldier entered the house and grabbed another of the brothers who was already sleeping in bed, and in the video you can even see him coming out barefoot and in shorts,” one of the relatives told Animal Político.

They added that the soldiers justified their actions by saying that the car looked suspicious and that gunshots had been reported in the area minutes before. The young people are afraid to report the incidents due to possible reprisals.

Since the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo began, there have been different incidents in which the military has acted under suspicion or in response to alleged aggression and has cost the lives of innocent people. As was the case in Chiapas, where a group of migrants were traveling in the back of a pickup truck and the soldiers fired their firearms.

In Sonora, in separate incidents, a nurse and a minor lost their lives. In the first case, it is unknown what led the military to open fire on a pickup truck in which a family was traveling; In the second, the vehicle driven by a relative of the minor was caught in the crossfire.
