Cozumel aims to strengthen its sister port partnership with Miami to foster tourism exchange between the two cities. To achieve this, Mayor José Luis Chacón Méndez met with Eric Olafson, Director of Port Miami’s commerce division.
The meeting aimed at establishing a sister port partnership to facilitate information exchange and promote potential cooperation opportunities. Both parties expressed their enthusiasm for this development, considering it an honor for Cozumel to collaborate with the world’s leading cruise port, which serves as the primary source of boat tourism for the island.
During the gathering, Mayor Chacón emphasized that this sister port partnership would yield significant benefits in terms of security, marketing, advertising, and shared experiences with a globally renowned port. He welcomed Eric Olafson to Cozumel and highlighted the importance of such an alliance.
In response, Eric Olafson expressed his pleasure at meeting with Mayor Chacón and his team: “We’re excited about establishing sister ports and look forward to strengthening our relationship. We aim to create a robust alliance through shared experiences and growth plans.” He is responsible for overseeing commerce across Port Miami, ensuring that all cruises depart from the port, serving approximately 8.2 million passengers annually.
Notably, around 4 million of these cruise passengers arrive in Cozumel. The twinning between ports is expected to boost tourism on the island by enhancing this specific segment.
