The National Association of Regional Business Councils (Ancer) has expressed its concern about the potential shift in crime to Playa del Carmen, warning that this could have severe consequences for the area’s reputation as a major tourist destination in Quintana Roo.
According to Lenin Amaro, president of the Ancer Tourism Commission, recent security measures implemented in Cancun have been effective. However, he fears that the “cockroach effect” may lead to criminals seeking refuge in nearby areas, such as Playa del Carmen, which are considered vulnerable.
To address this concern, Amaro has urged strengthening security mechanisms in the coastal region of Solidaridad to protect both tourists and residents from potential crime. Without an adequate protection plan, the area’s attractiveness and stability could be compromised, impacting its economy and reputation.
The situation highlights the importance of security in key tourist destinations in Mexico, where a perception of tranquility is essential for attracting visitors and promoting economic development in the region.
The municipal authorities in Cancun have implemented 70 new intelligent monitoring points or video surveillance equipment to enhance security. These are connected to the modernized Command and Control Center and complemented by 600 neighborhood cameras strategically placed throughout the city.
