The family of Shanquella, a young American woman who died under mysterious circumstances in Los Cabos two years ago, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her female companions, alleging assault, negligence, conspiracy, and emotional distress.
In a new development, the family’s lawyer, Sue-Ann Robinson, announced that they will sue the women involved in Shanquella’s trip, along with the United States Department of State and the FBI, due to their alleged failure to investigate the case adequately. The lawsuit was filed in Mecklenburg County Superior Court last year after federal prosecutors declined to file charges due to lack of evidence.
Shanquella’s mother, Sallamondra, expressed her frustration with the lack of progress in the investigation, saying, “I want each and every one of you to do what you can to help us achieve justice. We need justice for Shanquella. It has been two years, and there is no reason why they haven’t been arrested yet.”
The lawsuit alleges that Sallamondra suffered damages exceeding $25,000 due to her daughter’s wrongful death. The family has also accused the FBI of withholding documents related to the investigation, which they obtained through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
In response to the allegations, an FBI spokesperson stated, “It is our standard practice to decline comment on pending litigation.”
As a reminder, Shanquella, 25, from Charlotte, North Carolina, died in San José del Cabo on October 29, 2022, while on vacation with six acquaintances. Initially, her friends reported that she had died from alcohol poisoning, but the autopsy report and death certificate from the Mexican Ministry of Health list a different cause of death: “severe spinal cord injury and atlas dislocation.”
