The Cervantino Festival is over, but the city of Guanajuato is not stopping with seasonal activities, as now it is the turn of the Day of the Dead Festival.
Head to this World Heritage City and enjoy the events and attractions that will be part of the sixth edition of the festival. Here we tell you the details.
When is the Day of the Dead Festival in Guanajuato?
The Day of the Dead Festival in Guanajuato begins on the night of Thursday, October 31 and will run until the night of Sunday, November 3.
Where will the Day of the Dead Festival be?
It will be held in different parts of the historic center of Guanajuato, such as the underground Miguel Hidalgo street, the Santa Paula cemetery, the Allende and San Roque squares, the Unión Garden and Sopeña Street.
What will be at the Day of the Dead Festival?
One of the main attractions is the ‘Tunnel of Tradition’, located in the underground street. It consists of a gastronomic, cultural and artisan corridor with more than 200 exhibitors, music and live shows, as well as altars of the dead and an immersive experience in its arches, with projections alluding to death.
Find it well, because on this same street will be the Parade of Catrinas and Skulls.
Another of the most attractive activities is the so-called Procession of the Little Angels, which will start at the old railway station and end at Plaza Allende, filling the streets with decorated floats, calandrias, catrinas, coffins, music and characters in costume.
The iconic steps of the University of Guanajuato will exhibit a monumental offering, dedicated to the Guanajuato muralist Diego Rivera and the painter Frida Kahlo.
In Guanajuato there can’t be any shortage of street parties, but the ones that are coming are macabre. Meanwhile, the Santa Paula pantheon will have night tours.
In Allende Square, the catrinas contest for adults and children will be held; in the Jardín Unión there will be the alfeñique contest; in San Roque Square, minstrels will perform; and on Sopeña Street, the ‘death carpet’ will be created, handcrafted with colored sawdust.
If you like theater, the classic theater play Don Juan Tenorio will be presented at the Mesón de San Antonio.
This year’s guests of honor are Aguascalientes, with a tribute to José Guadalupe Posada, and Guatemala, which will arrive with a pavilion in which it will exhibit a photographic collection of the giant kites, a tradition of that country to honor its dead.
How much does it cost to enter the Day of the Dead Festival?
Admission to all places and events is free.
