Informal vendors working near the “Lucas de Gálvez” market in downtown Mérida have come forward about experiencing threats and harassment from Market Subdirectorate inspectors.
According to these vendors, the intimidation has escalated over several weeks, targeting members of the “La Concordia” group who face warnings that their goods will be confiscated and their sales points shut down. Esteban Solis Bote, secretary of “La Concordia,” identified Adrian Caballero, an inspector named after lawyer Lozano Poveda, as one of those responsible for ordering these threats.
The vendors claim municipal inspectors have threatened to fire them if they belong to the “La Concordia” group or three other associated groups. Over 300 vendors have reported being targeted by officials who have disconnected their electricity, reduced their sales space without cause, and suspended some of them for up to a week.
The affected vendors are calling on Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada for intervention. They threaten to take drastic measures if ignored: a large protest with families, positions, and all the people in front of the Palace.
