National Guard members were involved in a car crash while under the influence of alcohol in Tabasco. The incident occurred amidst a security crisis in the region, which has seen an increase in violence due to fights between organized crime groups.
The driver of the National Guard’s pick-up truck (number 28729) ran a red light and collided with a private vehicle at the intersection of Paseo Usumacinta and Andrés García in Villahermosa. According to videos shared on social media, the patrol was speeding and failed to respect traffic rules.
Two people were injured in the crash, including a National Guard agent. The occupants of the private vehicle, who had just attended a soccer game, recorded footage showing one of the guardsmen attempting to hide several bottles of alcohol in a black bag. Another guard tried to revive his colleague on the ground.
“This is the security we have in the State,” said one of the affected individuals, referencing the National Guard members involved in the incident.
The driver of the official truck fled the scene, leaving behind three colleagues. Tabasco is experiencing a surge in violence, with intentional homicides increasing by 246 percent from January to September compared to the same period last year (from 187 to 647). The city has also seen an uptick in robberies and vandalism, leading to business closures.
In response to this situation, the federal government deployed National Guard units and military personnel to reinforce security measures in various areas.
