In memory of reporters who have passed away, some due to natural causes, others in the line of duty and for various reasons, the Veracruz State Journalists Association placed an altar for the dead that will be available until Saturday, November 2.
Offering in memory of journalists from Veracruz
According to the president of the association, Rodolfo Herrera Sánchez, the altar contains the photographs of around 42 media workers from the Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area who are no longer on this earthly plane.
He clarified that at least 36 died of natural causes, two more died in traffic accidents and four due to the violence of organized crime and cited cases such as Miguel Ángel López Velasco, Yolanda Ordaz, Gabriel Huge and Guillermo Luna.
Some of the necessary utensils to practice the profession of journalism were placed on the altar, such as a typewriter, a pen, a camera.
The offering will remain until Saturday, November 2, in a well-known restaurant in the city of Veracruz.
Practicing journalism continues to be a risk
On the other hand, regarding journalistic activity, Herrera Sánchez said that the activity has become more complicated, since the murder of a journalist in Colima was recently recorded and he regretted that impunity prevails in these cases.
In this sense, he called on the new authorities who will take the oath of office in the State Congress and the government to comply with the commitment of no more dead reporters, since he said that it has been a banner that they use in campaigns, but they do not put it into practice.
“They have used the banners of no more dead journalists, that they comply, that impunity ends and that there is an investigation, that they do not grab scapegoats to try to clarify and calm the spirits,” he said.
He said that journalism has served as a social comptroller, uncovering cases of corruption in the country, so he insisted that within this profession there is method, investigation and it must be valued and respected.
