Priest and Four Young People Assaulted on Highway Between Puebla and Veracruz

A group from the Legionaries of Christ, consisting of a priest named Francisco Aguilar and four young individuals, fell victim to an assault on Sunday afternoon along the federal highway between Ciudad Mendoza-Tehuacán in Veracruz and Puebla. Fortunately, they have been secured.

Initial reports circulating on social media suggested that the group was kidnapped; however, the Catholic congregation has dismissed these claims while issuing a call for peace.

“The insecurity plaguing Mexico is a challenge that requires collective commitment,” said a statement from the Legionaries of Christ. “United in our pursuit of peace, justice, and respect, we firmly believe it’s possible to build a safer and better Mexico.”

The group was attacked on the highway near Cumbres de Acultzingo while heading back to Mexico City after participating in a spiritual retreat.

“Thankfully, the priest and the four young men are now safe,” the Legionaries of Christ expressed their gratitude. “We thank everyone for their prayers and for keeping a close eye on the situation.”
