In the framework of the celebrations for the Day of the Dead, a young student from Conalep Tonalá 170 in Chiapas, Ana Yoselin Cabrera, went viral when she presented a Catrina dress made with a thousand guajillo chiles, which evoke both the culinary traditions and the cultural identity of the region.
With this original proposal, the “Catrina of the Guajillo Chiles” became a phenomenon on social networks, being applauded by thousands of users for her creativity and respect for the traditional elements of Chiapas.
Ana Yoselin’s outfit was designed and created from recyclable and natural materials, characteristic of the southern region of Mexico. The enormous skirt, the main piece of the costume, was made with hundreds of guajillo chiles varnished with coconut oil, which gave them a special shine that enhances the intense red color of the chiles.
This detail not only adds visual beauty, but also represents a tribute to one of the most popular ingredients in Mexican cuisine, as the guajillo chile is a staple in many dishes from Chiapas.
In addition to the dress, the outfit includes a hat that attracted attention for its impressive ornamentation. Decorated with cempasúchil flowers, the representative flower of the Day of the Dead, the hat also incorporates guajillo chile seeds, palm branches and poultry feathers, symbolizing a connection with the roots and materials of Chiapas. This combination of elements gives the outfit a vibrant and authentic appearance, which conveys the spirit of the holiday and the richness of the Chiapas culture.
Through her Facebook account, Ana Yoselin shared the photographs of the outfit that quickly gained popularity, with messages of support and praise for her craftsmanship. The young woman explained that she did not create it alone, as she had the support of her family and loved ones to make the dress, a project that required several days of dedication and patience.
Although the design of the “Catrina de los Chiles Guajillos” unfortunately did not win the contest, finishing third in her school’s costume contest, her creation was a resounding success on social media, where Internet users agreed that it deserved first place. Comments such as “Incredible tribute to our traditions!” and “A true work of art” flooded the young woman’s posts, showing the public’s appreciation for her effort and creativity.
