Devotees in Mérida commemorated Santa Muerte through various activities, with a highlight on a pilgrimage from Xoclán to the main sanctuary, known as the Santuario Familia de Devotos de la Niña Blanca in the Mercedes Barrera neighborhood. This sanctuary houses over 2,000 images of Santa Muerte, donated primarily by grateful followers, making it the largest in the Southeast region.
In an interview with Luis Antonio Poh Quintal, also known as Tequila, he expressed that the purpose behind these commemorations is not about asking for favors but rather about expressing gratitude towards Santa Muerte for both the good and challenging experiences life has brought. According to him, Santa Muerte knows her followers’ needs better than they do themselves.
Before the pilgrimage, a serenade with mariachis and a rosary ceremony took place at the Santa Muerte Boutique Esotérica by Amanda on Juan Pablo II Avenue. During this event, hundreds of images were gathered for the ritual, where attendees placed their Santa Muertes on a table and received bouquets of basil.
The large turnout of devotees from Mérida, as well as visitors from other states like Campeche and Quintana Roo, is evidence of the significant following Santa Muerte has garnered over the years. According to Poh Quintal, thousands of people attend these commemorations each year. The devotion expressed in these events reflects not only the religious significance but also the altruistic nature of its followers, who are driven by a desire to support those in need.
The interviews and descriptions highlight the depth of devotion, the significance of the pilgrimage as a central activity among many others, and the geographical reach of Santa Muerte’s following. The narrative conveys the importance placed on gratitude over petitioning for favors and underscores the community-driven nature of these celebrations. Moreover, the focus is on expressing appreciation for life’s experiences and acknowledging Santa Muerte’s role in guiding followers through both challenges and successes.
