The magic of tradition took over the center of Mérida and the “finishing” of Paseo de Montejo with a new edition of the Catrinas Parade, one of the central events of the Festival de las Ánimas.
Hundreds of people gathered along the route, many with painted faces and outfits alluding to the festivity, as the Catrinas made their way from the first square to La Plancha Park. This year’s edition was a success, with 14 groups dressed as Catrinas taking part in the parade. Karla Berrón Cámara, director of Municipal Identity and Culture, reported that the route was designed to take them through the heart of Mérida, starting from the Casa de Montejo, passing by the Cathedral, and continuing along 60th Street until reaching 47th, before heading to the Gastronomic Corridor and finally La Plancha Park.
Berrón Cámara expressed her satisfaction with this edition, highlighting how traditions are preserved while receiving new influences. She hopes that this activity will continue for many more years.
The festival featured a variety of activities, including the Catrinas Parade and the Mexican Night, which were designed to welcome customs from other states. The parade was accompanied by the Sinaloa band RM, whose musicians dressed as catrines and performed alongside the Catrinas. The festive atmosphere was ignited by their music, with people dancing and watching the colorful show.
Additionally, the Mariachi Estrellas Juvenil and the Folkloric Ballet of the City of Merida in various groups were also present, along with a recreation of the movie “Coco” by LF Show. Overall, this year’s Festival de las Ánimas was a celebration of tradition, culture, and community spirit.
