A group of Uber drivers held a demonstration this Wednesday in Tajamar to denounce the abuses and arbitrariness inflicted by the authorities, particularly the National Guard.
The latest case involved a young man whose car was towed to the impound lot with him still inside, prompting anger among his colleagues.
Around 80 driver partners who work through the Uber platform attended the main entrance of Malecón Tajamar to urge the authorities to put an end to the harassment they have been suffering.
“This is a peaceful demonstration meant to reach the airport due to the arbitrariness committed by the National Guard,” said one of the drivers on the platform.
The goal was for the drivers at Tajamar and then proceed in a caravan along Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard until reaching one of the terminals at Cancun International Airport.
However, patrols from the National Guard arrived at the meeting spot, engaged in a brief dialogue with them, and promised that there would soon be a formal meeting to hear all their demands.
The main reason for the dissatisfaction among driver partners is the constant abuse and arbitrariness they suffer at the hands of officers from this corporation.
Despite Uber’s argument that they have a protection order allowing them to provide services at the airport, National Guard members continue to make arrests every day at the air terminal.
The fines for each arrest range from 60 thousand pesos, in addition to the lost workdays spent on the process of recovering the car from the impound lot. Although Uber usually pays these fines, there is still an impact on workers.
Seven patrol cars arrived at Tajamar and after a few minutes, the Uber drivers decided to suspend their caravan and wait for a future meeting.
